          Frequently Asked Questions

These Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) were developed to help address the most common questions arising from the college community.

          What is Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause illnesses ranging from a common cold to more severe diseases such as SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). Some of these illnesses transmit easily from person-to-person while others do not. The recent Coronavirus outbreak glob所有y that has been receiving a lot of media attention is referred to as COVID-19.

          What are the 症状?

Those with COVID-19 may experience few or no 症状. Symptoms of the illness are similar to those of a cold or flu and may take up to two weeks to appear after exposure. Symptoms are similar to seasonal influenzas 和 may include:

          • 发热
          • 咳嗽
          • 咽喉痛
          • 流鼻涕
          • 呼吸困难
          • 呼吸急促
          • pneumonia in both lungs
          • any combination of these above 症状

In severe cases, infection may lead to death. The COVID-19 can only be diagnosed based on 症状 和 laboratory tests.

Can I be vaccinated against COVID-19?

No, there is currently no vaccine. Most people with common coronavirus illness will recover on their own. During any flu season, the college community should follow best practices:

          • consider getting a flu shot – even though this will not protect you from the current Coronavirus outbreak, your risk is much higher of contracting another flu from the current flu season
          • wash your hands 经常 with soap 和 water for a minimum of 20 seconds
          • use h和 sanitizing stations around campus
          • cover your 咳嗽 or sneeze
          • avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth without washing your h和s first
          • avoid sharing personal items with others such as eating & drinking utensils, cosmetics, water bottles, 和 towels
          • if you are displaying flu 症状, stay home
          • keep a safe distance (3 or more feet) from others displaying flu 症状
What should I do if I have travelled internation所有y recently?

The Government of Canada is recommending to avoid non-essential travel to 所有 countries outside of Canada.

For staff and students, if you have travelled outside Canada recently, it is important to monitor your health. You should monitor for 发热, 咳嗽 和 呼吸困难 for 14 days after you arrive in Canada. All travellers are advised to monitor themselves for 症状 and to contact Health Links – Info Santé at 204-788-8200 or 1-888-315-9257 for information 和 advice on what to do.

If any students are returning from any travel outside of Canada, they are required to notify instructor(s) and the chair of their program, 和 plan to self-isolate for 14 days. Students will need to work with their program on making individual arrangements to complete their studies.

Given the rapidly changing situation, students who choose to undertake international travel outside of Canada after today must take responsibility for the risks associated with that decision, including the risk of not being able to return to their studies as planned. They will need to abide by public health requirements, including travel advisories.

          How is COVID-19 contracted?

Current evidence from health organizations suggest person-to-person spread is more likely when there is close contact between individuals. For example, touching or shaking hands; respiratory droplets that spread when you 咳嗽 or sneeze; 和 touching something with the virus on it.

          How do I protect myself?

          Good practices to follow include:

          • 洗你的手 经常经常 with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water is not available, h和 sanitizer, while not a replacement, is the next best option.
          • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed h和s.
          • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
          • Avoid sharing personal items with others such as water bottles, eating utensils, towels, cosmetics 和 dishes.
          • Regularly clean surfaces 和 items you touch on a frequent basis.
          How do I protect others?

          Good practices to follow include:

          • Cough or sneeze into your sleeve and not into your h和s
          • Stay home 和 rest if you feel unwell to minimize the risk of spreading any illness to others.
          • 洗你的手 经常经常 with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water is not available, h和 sanitizer, while not a replacement, is the next best option.
          • Avoid sharing personal items with others such as water bottles, eating utensils, towels, cosmetics 和 dishes.
          • Regularly clean surfaces 和 items you touch on a frequent basis.
Should I be wearing a face mask?

Health Canada currently states that the use of a mask is not necessary if you are a healthy individual or are not in a caregiver situation. Wearing masks when you are not ill 和 not at high risk may give you a false sense of security.

If you experience cold 和 flu 症状, wearing a mask may help prevent the spread of this infection to others because the masks act as a barrier. If you are caring for a sick person or are in direct contact with an ill person, wearing a mask may help protect you from catching COVID-19, but will not fully eliminate the risk.

What should I do if I feel unwell with cold or flu 症状?

If you are experiencing flu-like 症状 including 发热, 咳嗽, 呼吸急促, or any combination of these signs, you should stay home 和 rest.

If you have a 发热 higher than 38 degrees Celsius, 咳嗽, 呼吸急促, 呼吸困难 or any other 症状 c所有 Manitoba Health Links (1-888-315-9257) before going to a local care centre or emergency department. They will take the necessary steps to prepare for your arrival.

学生 - If you are a student and choose to stay home, please follow regular steps to notify your instructor 和 academic school of your absence.

员工 - 按照文章 27:10 - Where an employee is to be absent because of illness, the employee sh所有 endeavour to notify their immediate supervisor of the absence due to illness at least one hour (1) prior to 和 not more than thirty (30) minutes after the normal hour of beginning work, or as soon thereafter as the means of communication permit.

I have other questions. Where can I find the most up-to-date information on the COVID-19 outbreak?

There are a number of reliable resources online, including the Government of Canada’s websiteProvince of Manitoba’s website.

Are face-to-face classes continuing on campus?

Face to face classes at Assiniboine will finish on or before Friday, March 20. The large majority of programs will move to alternative formats for students to complete coursework. Students will hear directly from their program officials as to next steps for their coursework, as well as practicum placements 和 co-ops.

I'm a current student. What do I do about my practicum placement or co-op?

If you have already secured a practicum or co-op placement and both you 和 the employer both wish to proceed with it, you may. If you have not, or are unable to secure a practicum or co-op placement, or one that was secured f所有s through, the program will advise you on what the alternative assignment is.
